Popular singer, Mzbel, has urged former president John Mahama not to contest the 2020 presidential election
Mzbel, who campaigned hard for Mahama before and during his disastrous 2016 election campaign, took to Facebook to issue the warning. She said Mahama was betrayed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) faithful and should no longer involve himself in the affairs of the party.
Mzbel said Mahama was now a statesman and had been accepted by the international community as a proud son of Africa. She said there was therefore no reason for him to get involved in the “betrayal and pettiness” of Ghanaian politics. “Daddy, please don’t descend into the Ghanaian gutter. Let those who betrayed you come up with their flagbearer,” she said.
Mzbel’s plea comes amid rumours that Mahama is planning to contest the election in 2020. Reports say he has hired consultants to guide him and help him to present himself again to the Ghanaian people.
Mahama has not confirmed another shot at the presidency in 2020, but he has called on NDC supporters to unite to wrestle power from the NPP. The former president was beaten by Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 election, with about one million votes separating him and the current president.
