The 2017 Africa Scientific Renaissance Day has begun, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission has said.
In a letter signed to GhanaNet News, the Acting Director-General of the Commission, Prof Shiloh Osae, said the four-day event,being hosted this year by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), and which began today June 27, 2017, would end on Friday June 30,2017.
The Africa Scientific Renaissance Day is a day set aside every year by the Africa union to remind all African governments and people about the critical role Science and technology play in national development. The event is in remembrance of Africa’s great contribution to the rise and development of modern science and technology.
By hosting this year’s event, the GAEC aims to use the event to highlight the strides made in the introduction of nuclear energy in Ghana’s energy mix, amongst other gains in Ghana’s quest for nuclear power. It also seeks to highlight the gains Ghana has made in space science and technology with the commissioning of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory later in the year at Kuntunse, Accra.
Agencies under MESTI will also showcase various technologies and innovations during the celebrations. The keynote address will be delivered by the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations, Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, at the grand durbar on Friday june 30,2017.
The Commission, in collaboration with other agencies under MESTI, has lined up a number of activities to commemorate the day.
- Tuesday June 27- Open day/quiz competition at GAEC auditorium
- Wednesday June 28-Editors’ forum/Media familiarization tour of GAEC facilities
- Thursday June 29-Seminar Presentations at GAEC auditorium and a trip to Kuntunse National Radio Astronomy Observatory
- Friday June 30-Grand durbar/Exhibition by GAEC, agencies under MESTI and other institutions of interest at the graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences ( SNAS).
These activities are open to the general public from 9:30am, the letter said.
