1,000 Housing units for Akosombo Dam victims to begin soon – Oppong Nkrumah

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that the government is constructing 1,000 housing units for individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by displaced victims.

He further revealed that phase two of the project, which includes 1,010 additional units, has been approved, and the commencement certificate has been secured.

The government is now finalizing the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition processes to begin construction in this phase.

“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 percent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units. We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2.”

The spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which occurred on October 15, 2023, devastated communities along the Lower Volta Basin.

Approximately 88,000 people were affected, and over 5,000 homes were destroyed. Nearly a year later, many victims remain displaced.
