8,565 Migrants Died in 2023, Per UN Report

With 8,565 documented migrant deaths, 2023 was the bloodiest year since 2014.

The Mediterranean route from North Africa to Europe continues to be the most dangerous for migrants, according to the UN, which stated the number is a 20% increase from 2022.

In a study released on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that “the 2023 death toll represents a tragic increase of 20 percent compared to 2022, highlighting the urgent need for action to prevent further loss of life.”

The organization’s Missing Migrants project keeps track of migrant fatalities and disappearances across the globe.

“These alarming statistics compiled by the Missing Migrants Project also serve as a reminder that we need to recommit to taking more steps to ensure safe movement forThe analysis stated that slightly over half of all migrant deaths in 2023 will occur. Automobile accidents accounted for 9% of the deaths, while violent crimes accounted for 7%.
This year, 512 migrants have already passed away.
