Akufo-Addo inaugurates New Akim Oda Market

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a newly constructed market complex in Akim Oda, located in the Birim Central Municipality of Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The ceremony, marked by jubilant celebrations from the Chiefs and residents, showcased the region’s progress toward modernised trading infrastructure.

The new facility replaces the old Akim Oda market, which was devastated by a fire in September 2021. The blaze destroyed hundreds of sheds, displaced numerous traders, and caused significant losses.

Constructed under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) as part of the $100 million Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP), the project received funding through the World Bank’s Urban Development Grant (UDG).

Features of the market

The market complex boasts a range of modern facilities, including:

– Over 250 lockable stores.
– A clinic to provide healthcare services.
– A banking hall to facilitate financial transactions.
– A crèche to cater to the needs of traders with young children.

The market’s innovative design incorporates storey buildings strategically positioned around the complex, providing a safer and more efficient trading environment.
Presidential commendation

President Akufo-Addo praised the District Assemblies Common Fund Secretariat and its Administrator, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, for their effective implementation of the project. He highlighted the importance of the market in revitalising economic activities in Akim Oda and providing traders with a dignified space to conduct business.

The Akim Oda market project is one of several initiatives being undertaken in 25 municipalities across Ghana under the GSCSP, aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and promoting economic growth.

The community now anticipates that the new market will not only restore livelihoods but also attract increased trade and investment to the area.
