Business as usual for some teachers despite strike over arrears

Despite the strike declared by three teacher unions, some public schools have seen teachers reporting to their posts for teaching duties.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared the strike starting today over the non-payment of their arrears.

At the Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School in Sekondi-Takoradi for instance, the Headmistress of the school, Charlotte Asiedu Musah, told Citi News that classes have been ongoing as the teachers’ were unions yet to inform the school about any strike.

“So far as I am concerned, my teacher’s rep at NAGRAT and GNAT hasn’t informed me. They haven’t come to tell me whether they are on strike or not.”

When she went on her rounds, she said “teachers were in the classrooms teaching.”

The Archbishop Porter Girls’ Local Representative of NAGRAT, Mercy Doreen Sam, told Citi News the local branch is yet to receive an official notice about the strike.

“No letter has been brought so teachers have come to school alright… since we have not received any letter, we can’t say we are going home to rest so we are waiting until the time the letter comes.”

While some teachers in some schools in the Ashanti Region have complied with the strike, others have not. Lessons were in session at some of the schools Citi News visited.

These headteachers who chose to remain anonymous say teachers at the schools have turned up and lessons were ongoing.

The classrooms of schools that complied with the strike were locked up. Some of the pupils affected by the strike chose to use their free period to play football at a nearby Park.

In Tamale, some public schools Citi News visited were adhering to the strike declared by the three teacher unions.

Although some teachers were present, they have not been seen teaching.

At the Kanvili Junior High School, students who were scheduled to begin their end of term exams were seen loitering around the school compound.

According to them, their teachers have cancelled the examination due to the strike.

Some of the students who spoke to Citi News said the action is impacting negatively on academic work and appealed to the government to address the plight of the teachers.
