Hope and Health: Free Mammograms and Ultrasound Screenings Bring Lifesaving Care to Underprivileged Women
The non-governmental organization, the Gorman Nova Pathways, earlier this year contributed $5,000 toward the performing of mammogram and ultrasound tests on a hundred needy women at the Euracare Advanced Diagnostic and Heart Centre in Accra. This campaign done in collaboration with Euracare Ghana sought to offer first stages breast cancer screenings, consultation before screening and general information as par the Breast Cancer Awareness Month that ended last week. Help and comfort were provided to women with no access to specific and professional healthcare services through the screenings.
The program aligns with one of Gorman Nova Pathways’ four core pillars: areas of personal importance: women and children, health, water/sanitation/ hygiene, and education. Co-founder of EBNF, Elinda Stevens Gorman mentioned that the idea behind the initiative is to overcome financial barriers to other important breast cancer diagnostic procedures for women. ‘We wish to extend that financial barriers should not be a reason for early detection hence, healthy people,’ she said adding that one in eight women around the world is at the risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Mrs. Gorman also encouraged women to examine themselves monthly for any changes in the breast and if so, should immediately consult the doctor. She noted that the cancer can be treated if diagnosed early and called on women to be aware all the remaining months of the year apart from October.
Cofounder and cardiologist Dr. Alfred Gorman also repealed their vision on enhancing women health in Ghana. He mentioned that the organization would also identify needy societies hoping that it could drill boreholes or dig wells to avail safe water. Moreover, they aim at engaging the apex communities on clean environment and practicing environmentalism.
